Authored by: Koel Bhattacharjee

Picking the perfect candidate

This is one of the most important questions for hiring managers and recruiters of any organization. Every company and their hiring managers will surely have a different approach towards finding a perfect candidate. In a general recruitment process, you may picture a perfect candidate as someone who is having a relevant educational experience and technical skill required to perform a job.

No matter what kind of business you run, it is important that you have the quality of resources to help your company run seamlessly and achieve its goal. But very few companies have ever taken that time to define what they are exactly looking for when it comes to hiring an ideal and perfect candidate. As a recruiter, it is the right time to take a step back and contemplate discussing the job requirement in detail.

Asking the Right Question

We say it is important to discuss the following questions before initiating the recruitment process:

  • What kind of talent are you trying to attract to your organization?
  • What kind of resources is needed to achieve the respective goal?
  • What kind of employees will contribute to the company culture we are trying to build?
  • What kind of personality will represent the company’s culture effectively?

While we understand that having the right skill set for a new hire is essential, but there are other aspects, like personality and attitude. A candidate’s personality cannot be changed or trained. Adaptability is also crucial. It is important to keep in mind that the perfect candidate would be one who is flexible enough to adapt to the changing landscape of work, company culture and industry in general.

You may get a lot of candidates who will say “I can do this job”, but paying attention to their interpersonal skills, communication skills, thought process and emotional intelligence are equally important, to determine that whether the candidate will be a short term fix or a long term solution.
